This is the third in a series of three articles about honoring ourselves through the artful expression of Yes and No. It is adapted from Solid Ground’s foundational course, “Love Yourself to Success and Fulfillment.”
Have you noticed that successful and deeply fulfilled people march to the beat of their own drums? They listen to themselves. They respect themselves. They trust themselves. They say Yes to themselves and what matters to them. They realize that they are the experts on their lives.
Many of these highly successful people speak openly about being led by inner guidance, so I committed long ago to cultivating my own inner guidance and teaching my clients how to tune into theirs. I recognized early on that inner guidance is not a one-size-fits-all experience; it speaks to each of us in unique ways. Even so, there are channels through which guidance flows for most people, and there’s one in particular that is so basic it’s easy to dismiss. As we impatiently seek inspired instructions from a burning bush or, at the very least, a clear inner voice that speaks to us in full sentences, we overlook the most fundamental message from our guidance system: our heartfelt desires.
Our heartfelt desires are an expression of who we are, calling us in a particular direction. (And if being called in a particular direction isn’t guidance, I don’t know what is.) I’ll share a personal story with you to illustrate how fundamental what we want is to our inner guidance system.
Years ago, when my business wasn’t growing as quickly as I’d hoped it would, I considered leasing my house and finding a less expensive place to live. It was an idea I came up with when I was feeling resigned and, yes, more than a little depressed. (Hint: our best ideas don’t generally arise when we are depressed.)
The former CPA in me went about gathering information and developing spreadsheets with various what-if scenarios. I mentioned my idea to a couple of friends. Within less than a week, one of those friends called to tell me that another friend of hers was temporarily relocating from Europe to the U.S. and was looking for a home to rent here. She thought mine would be perfect for him.
I froze. I wasn’t ready to act that quickly. Yet part of me fell prey to a way of thinking I’d picked up early in my New Age wanderings, and it’s one I’ve witnessed in many of my clients that tends to confuse rather than help them. Here’s what that part of me thought: “Wow, this showed up quickly. It must be the Universe telling me what I’m supposed to do.”
Let me get right to the heart of the matter. Many things will show up in your life—some quickly and easily, some…not so much. And it’s true that the more you live from your most expanded and evolved self—the more centered and clear and at peace you are—the better your life flows. Things you want do show up with greater ease.
But the kicker is that you have to actually know what you want in order to recognize those things. The “what you want” piece is fundamental to making choices that align with who you are. Acknowledging and honoring what you want is what distinguishes being “in the flow” from being adrift.
When I got that call from my friend, I felt my heart sink as she talked about how perfect my house could be for her other friend. I kept thinking, “But my house is perfect for me!” I recognized shortly after I hung up the phone that I didn’t want to lease my beloved home. I wanted to stay in it and grow my business. So that’s what I did.
Of course, I had to learn to support what I wanted rather than doubting it, but that’s exactly the point. Inner guidance calls us forward to learn, to grow, to experience and to create – the very essence of fulfillment. Learning to say Yes to my inner guidance, and then empowering myself to follow it, has been essential to my evolution.
So don’t give your power away to “the Universe.” The Universe—Life, Divine Presence, Source—speaks and lives through you, as You. Listen to your heart of hearts. If you want to create a life you love, let love lead.
